Coastal Engineered Products

  • Coastal Engineered Products was engaged in the pultrusion business; where glass fibers are pulled through a heated die after passing through a resin bath to form a wide variety of  lineal products.  Product applications for this technology included door and window frames for refrigerated cases and handles for tools.

  • Coastal Engineered Products resulted from the merger of two virtually bankrupt pultrusion companies and a capital infusion of $200,000.  Neither predecessor company was profitable since they were not able to generate sufficient volume to run their equipment on a continuous basis.  Downtime for a pultrusion process is costly due to wasted raw materials and long set-up times.

  • The two merged companies, combined with $200,000 in equity capital and low cost financing provided by the State of South Carolina, emerged as a thriving enterprise.  The company's breakthrough client was Union Tool.  Coastal produced a line of lightweight, non-conductive handles for this customer which were used in a wide variety of applications including handles for shovels and gardening tools.

  • The company's profitability soared from breakeven on sales of under $1 million to 18% on sales of almost $10 million.  The company was sold to Omega Polymer Technologies, Inc. realizing annual return of 38% for stockholders over the 7-year cycle.
